The Principle Investigator (PI), Chun-Yen Chang, Professor of Department of Earth Sciences and Director of Science Education Center at National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU), Taipei, Taiwan, earned a bachelor's degree in the Earth sciences, NTNU, a master's degree and a Ph.D. degree in science education, The University of Texas at Austin. His major research interest includes e- Science Learning, science learning environment, computer-assisted learning and instruction, problem-solving models, science curriculum development, inquiry teaching, and pedagogical understandings and conceptual change instruction in the area of science education. Dr. Chang has directed numerous nationally funded projects sponsored by the Taiwanese National Science Council (NSC) and the Ministry of Education such as Earth Science Curriculum Development, Earth Science Learning Environment, and Improvement of University Science Education. He currently serves as Principal Investigator for the Building the e-Learning Research Teams for Excellence, which was one of the two major e-Learning projects selected by the NSC from 2005-2008. He also serves on the board of the National Association for Science Education in Taiwan (NASET) and was the vice president of NASET. Chang authored or co-authored more than 50 articles including more than 20 of the above papers indexed in the Science/Social Science Citation Index (SCI/SSCI) database. Chang has presented more than 70 papers, workshops, and seminars throughout Taiwan and in many countries and was invited as keynote/feature speakers in countries such as England, Japan, and Korea, and Puerto Rico. Chang was also invited to give a lunch seminar at the National Science Foundation (NSF) in the US on April 2, 2008. In 2003 Chang received the Outstanding Research Award, one of the highest research honors given by the National Science Council of Taiwan. Chang’s one series of research on science learning environment published in Science Education in 2005 and 2006 was also selected/reported in the section of ‘Taiwanese New Discovery” of the Science Development journal in 2007. Dr. Chang’s biography was included in 2007-2009 Marquis Who's Who in the World (24th, 25th, 26th Editions), Who's Who in Science and Engineering (10th Edition), and Who's Who in America (2009).

The PI of sub-project 1, Prof. Greg C Lee, has an academic background in the areas of Image Processing and Artificial Intelligence. Since coming to the National Taiwan Normal University, he has expanded his research areas to include that of Computer Science education. Within the past five years (since 2002), Prof. Lee has published some 34 referred papers in the Computer Science (CS) and Computer Education (CE) disciplines. Among which, nine are Journal papers (five in Computer Education and four in Computer Science) and 25 are International conference papers in both the Computer Science and the Computer Education disciplines. Many of those conference attendances were also supported through NSC funding. Prof. Lee has headed one NSC funded Group Research Project (2002~2005) and is still working on a three-year (2005~2008) NSC funded individual project. In addition, Prof. Lee has also served as co-PI on numerous NSC funded projects within the past 5 years. Prof. Lee is a member of IEEE and ACM and is a reviewer for numerous international journal and conferences. Prof. Lee has worked with the PI and the other co-PI in the past, ensuring a harmonic collaboration among the three main sub-projects. Furthermore, being the senior faculty among the co-PIs in the Classroom 2.0 sub-project and with experience in conducting joint-research projects, Prof. Lee is quite competent in leading the Classroom 2.0 sub-project.

The PI of sub-project 2, Dr. Ling-Jyh Chen, has an academic background in the area of computer networks with focus on mobile computing and wireless networks. Since Dr. Chen joined the Academia Sinica in 2005, he has published 32 referred papers in the computer science discipline. Among which, five are journal papers, 25 are international conference papers, and two are book chapters. Many of those conference attendances were also supported through NSC funding. Dr. Chen has headed three NSC funded individual projects (2005/11-2006/7, 2006/8-2007/7, 2007/1-2007/12) and is still working on two research projects funded by NSC (2007/8-2008/7) and Yushan National Park Headquarters (2008/3-12). In addition, Dr, Chen has served as co-PI on three NSC funded Group Research Projects within the past 3 years. Dr. Chen is an honorary member of Phi Tau Phi Scholastic Honor Society, and is a member of IEEE and ACM. In the past three years, Dr. Chen has served on the technical program committee of more than 40 international conferences, served as referee for numerous international journal and conferences, and chaired/co-chaired two international conferences. Dr. Chen’s biography was included in 2008-2009 Marquis Who's Who in the World (25th, 26th Editions), and Who's Who in Asia (2007).

The PI of sub-project 3-2, Dr. Yuen-Hsien Tseng, Research Fellow of Information Technology Center at National Taiwan Normal University, received his M.S. and Ph. D degrees in 1989 and 1993, respectively, both from the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, National Taiwan University. His major research interest includes text and multimedia information retrieval, text mining, natural language processing, machine learning, and intelligent systems applied to digital learning. Dr. Tseng has received 4 patents from Taiwan and Mainland China and published over 60 refereed papers in celebrated journals and conferences, such as IEEE Transactions on Computers, IEEE International Conference on Information Theory, ACM SIGIR Conference, Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology, and Information Processing and Management. In terms of impact, one of his publications, the ACM SIGIR paper in 1999, was cited by other 77 articles so far. Since 1998 he has received over 10 research awards from National Science Council and from the University he served. In 1999 he received the Second Prize Award for “Automatic Cataloguing and Searching” from the Fritz Kutter-Fonds, Zurich. Dr. Tseng is now serving the Conference Chair of ROCLING 2008 and Guest Editor of the special issue of Text Mining for the International Journal of Computational Linguistics and Chinese Language Processing.

The PIs and Co-PIs are close colleagues mainly from National Taiwan Normal University. They have collaborated with each other on previous projects and have been working on this particular proposal closely together for almost six months now. It is evident from above that they will be able to work as a great team in harmony for this project.
